Not getting good sleep? Thousands of studies will back you up in stating how important sleep is to your mental and overall health. If sleep has been a problem of yours for a time, you have probably experimented with some pharmaceutical solutions but now are reading this blog because those didn’t work like the flashy ads said they would. This is because sleep is a healthy, natural state and can’t be induced by any drug. A drug can only alter your consciousness so you don’t know that you are not asleep. Case in point, Michael Jackson.
Getting good sleep can be as complicated as health itself, so in some of our consulting cases we spend a lot of time trying to sort out the changes that have to be made to improve the health to the point that decent sleep is again possible.
Sometimes it is easier than that though and supporting some of the pathways involved in switching the brain into a sleep state work very nicely. Sleep often involves support of serotonin and GABA pathways and inhibiting things like glutamate.
A staple of our sleep help arsenal has been Kavinace by NeuroScience. The active ingredients are taurine and phenibut. Phenibut might get the record for the most names of a supplement. It is a GABA analog and is also known as: 4-amino-3-phenylbutyric acid, beta-phenyl-gamma aminobutyric acid, beta-phenyl-gamma-aminobutyric acid HCl, β-phenyl-γ-aminobutyric acid, fenibut, β-phenyl-GABA and brand names Noofen or Citrocard. Whew!!
For many people, this combination of taurine and phenibut is probably the best because taurine helps with the production of GABA and helps reduce oxidative stress and phenibut helps GABA action be more effective.
Kavinace has long been in the top 10 of our best sellers list and often would command the number one spot. NeuroScience has recently introduced a price change that we have to honor here at OVitaminPro.com. Because this price increase can make regular Kavinace use financially prohibitive, we would like to offer a couple of alternatives.
GabaCore by Apex is $34.46 for 60 capsules. The strength is 750 mg of the combination of taurine and phenibut instead of 950 mg in the 60 capsule Kavinace for $48.00. That works out to 4.5 cents per mg for GabaCore sleep aid products and 5 cents per mg in Kavinace. So 2 capsules of GabaCore might work for you and 2 capsules of Kavinace might be a little more than you need, so over time the GabaCore sleep aid products might save you some money.
Another option that works for some people is Biotics PheniTropic. This formula is 300 mg of phenibut per capsule and a 60 Capsule bottle is $27. We can’t do a price per mg comparison as we don’t know exactly how much of the 750 or 950 mg of the taurine phenibut combination is taurine and how much is phenibut. Many people have found this formula to work great without the taurine.
What will work best for you? You will have to experiment to see what is best. Many people have to add an adrenal support product like BetterGenix AdrenalGenix or NeuroScience AdreCor.
This is especially true if you fall asleep but cannot stay asleep.
Here’s to a great night’s sleep!
Great blog on Kavinace, Dr Dan
